St. Anastasia

Liège, circa 1250-1300
Illustration from a Book of Hours

The book and the martyr's palm branch are conventional elements in images of St. Anastasia. The Golden Legend says she was forced into three marriages with pagan suitors, one after another, so this image and many others picture her as a veiled matron, even though she refused to consummate any of the marriages and thus technically should qualify among virgin martyrs, who are usually pictured bare-headed.
